Poetry

  by Joseph Campbell
The poem below appears in several of Campbell’s essays. I transcribed it from the opening minutes of the 6-part DVD: The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers.

The Hero Path

We have not even to risk the adventure alone
for the heroes of all time have gone before us.
The labyrinth is thoroughly known ...
we have only to follow the thread of the hero path.
And where we had thought to find an abomination
we shall find a God.
And where we had thought to slay another
we shall slay ourselves.
Where we had thought to travel outwards
we shall come to the center of our own existence.
And where we had thought to be alone
we shall be with all the world.

 by Rumi

By day I praised you
and never knew it.
By night I stayed with you
and never knew it.
I always thought that
I was me — but no,
I was you
and never knew it.

There is a certain Love
that is formed out of the
elixir of the East.
There is a certain cloud,
impregnated with a
thousand lightnings.
There is my body,
in it an ocean formed of his glory,
all the creation,
all the universes,
all the galaxies,
are lost in it.

when i was a boy, very little
yes i was
i counted all the stars, from the middle
yes i did
the sky was my universe, me the master
yes i was
my craft was a chariot, only faster
yes it was
my goals were so simple, and so clear
yes they were
i could fly to the sun with no fear
yes i did
capturing the essence in my soul
yes i did
i explored the all of earth, and myself
yes i did
all of earth was an easy project
yes it was
my self an endless galaxy
yes it was

a few words may be not
we told you once and you forgot
how to make the world go round
stepping softly without a sound
events are fleeting and often we find
there's more to a moment with your kind
look to each action as if it were gold
you are a child of the cosmos and very bold
remember this always and state your place
others will know and respect your space
the universe is giving to those who take
and a menace to all who do not make
a stand and defend their right to create
exactly what they speculate
to be heaven

Song of Whales

Song of WhalesYour voice lingers when it speaks
like rippling heat over desert floor.
It draws my heart and I find myself
leaning toward its source
as though I know it will take me
where you always are.
It draws me near to your breath — the spiracle that
holds the words of home.
It draws me to the blanket you hold
around your soul you so willingly share.

If you were to dive below the waters
where the whales sing their songs
into the gathering of deep currents
that pull our courage along,
channels that flow free of worldly levels,
you would find me there.
Listening to the voice I hear in you.
Feeding my heart in the waters of deep blindness
where currents flow
mindful of you and your spirited ways.

Sometimes I listen so perfectly
I hear your soft breath forming words
before they are found by you.
Before you can bring them from
the deep blindness to your heart.

I wish I could take your hand
and let it hold my heart
so you could see what I know of you.
So you could know
where we live where we always are.
And you could pull your blanket of words
around us and I could simply listen
to your voice
that honors words
like the songs of whales.

Hidden Mystery

In the deepest depths of you and me
In the deepest depths of we
Lies the most beautiful jewel
Shining forth eternally

Within that precious jewel
Within that priceless piece of we
Lies a time beyond all time
Lies a place beyond all space

Within that sacred source of radiance
Lies a love beyond all love
Waiting
         Waiting
                   Waiting
Ever so patiently

Waiting for you, waiting for me
Waiting patiently for all to see
The beauty that is you inside of me
The beauty that is me inside of thee

In the deepest depths of you and me
In the deepest depths of we
Lies the love and wisdom
Of all Eternity
