Eastern & Western Hemispheres
These spectacular “blue marble” images are in the family of images that are the most detailed true-color images of the entire Earth to date. Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and artists stitched together months of observations of the land, oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer of our planet.

The Blue Marble
A spectacular combination of satellite imagery and art, forms a detailed view of the Western Hemisphere and recreates the impact of viewing Earth from space.
This artist’s rendering shows a view of our own Milky Way Galaxy and its central bar as it might appear if viewed from above. Astronomers have concluded for many years that our galaxy harbors a stellar bar. New observations by the GLIMPSE legacy team with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope indicate that the bar-shaped collection of old stars at the center of our galaxy may be longer, and at a different orientation, than previously believed. Our Milky Way galaxy may appear to be very different from an ordinary spiral galaxy.
There are more than 200 billion stars in our galaxy. Click here to see the same illustration, but with an arrow pointing to the location of our sun, solar system, Earth ... and you.
